Review of Motor Development Assessment Tools and Application

Abstract
PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was 1) to review motor development assessment tools, 2) compare the characteristics of the tools and 3) provide the application to physical education teachers and researchers related motor development and physical education. MABC-2 is used to assess overall motor development including manual dexterity, gross motor skill, and balance. This assessment tool especially is suitable for screening motor delay. TGMD-2 is used to assess twelve gross motor skills and the result from TGMD-2 is applied to plan and evaluate physical education curriculum or physical activity program. In this study, these two assessment tools were reviewed and the application to apply into school setting was reported.
METHOD
The literatures related these tools were reviewed to introduce how to assess motor development with these tools and the application for physical education and research.
RESULT
MABC-2 was used to assess overall levels of motor development including manual dexterity, aiming and catching, and balance and was took about forty minutes per one person. The results from MABC-2 were interpreted that the score below 16% means motor delay sufficient and the score below 5% means motor delay, respectively. TGMD-2 was applied to assess gross motor skills, six locomotor skills and six object manipulation skills, and modified in order to assess the numbers of children in a shorter time slot than a original assessment setting.
CONCLUSION
MABC-2 and TGMD-2 were applied to assess the levels of motor development and to screen and devide participants into research group. Also, these tools can be utilized to provide more detailed information with respect to motor coordination for physical education or research.
