Abstract

INTRODUCTION
The purposes of this study were to compare the differences between the cognition and measured intensities in bench press and squat for weight training in college women beginner, to develop an estimated equation for 1-RM using the cognition intensity and cognition-body weight, and to verify the validity of the developed model.
METHODS
The subject groups were consisted of 29 college untrained women. Each subject selected the cognition intensity of 60%, 75% and 90% of 1-RM without knowing the actual load that applied to the subject. The measured intensities were calculated 60%, 75% and 90% of 1-RM after 1-RM measurement. The t-test was run to analyze the significant differences between the cognition and measured intensities, and the regression analysis was applied to estimate 1-RM using the cognition intensities and body weight.
RESULTS
There was a significant difference between the cognition and the measured intensity of 60%, 75% and 90% 1-RM on both bench press and squat in the college untrained women (p<.01). The cognition intensities of bench press and squat were 3.3~6.6kg(6.6~15.4%) and 9.6~15.1kg(12.1~22.9%) lower than the measured intensity, respectively. Based on the regression analysis, the r of prediction for the bench press 1-RM by cognition 1-RM was ranged from 0.63 to 0.81(p<.01), and the r of prediction for the squat 1-RM by cognition 1-RM was ranged from 0.67 to 0.80(p<.01) in college untrained women. The r of prediction for the bench press 1-RM by cognition-body weight 1-RM was ranged from 0.76 to 0.83(p<.01), and the r of prediction for the squat 1-RM by cognition-body weight 1-RM was ranged from 0.73 to 0.83(p<.01).
CONCLUSION
In college untrained women, the cognition intensities were 6.6~22.9% lower than the measured intensities. The cognition intensities of bench press and squat were 6.6~15.4% and 12.1~22.9%, respectively, lower than those of measured intensities. The significant estimation models for 1-RM were developed both cognition and cognition-body weight model. Bench press 1-RM = -18.136 + 0.928 * cognition 90% 1-RM(kg) + 0.470 * body weight(kg). Squat 1-RM = - 36.527 + 0.811 * cognition 90% 1-RM(kg) + 1.029 * body weight(kg). This study suggests that the estimation model for various age groups should be developed based on multiple motions for the future study.
