Abstract

INTRODUCTION
The pressure in the abdomen and the thoracic with closing the glottis by Valsalva maneuver respiration technique. Valsalva maneuver respiration technique is often used for resistance exercise. Since both advantageous effects and risks have variously been reported from previous studies, the Valsalva maneuver respiration technique is still in the middle of controversy.
METHOD
This study includes previous studies dealing the Valsalva maneuver respiration technique and other issues regarding Valsalva maneuver respiration technique to its effects, risks and recommendations.
RESULT
In resistance exercises, this respiration technique increase the stability of spine, so it helps for the person to lift heavy weight, therefore, resistance exercise skills are effectively performed and risks of injury is reduced. However, this respiration technique has the risks such as rapid change in blood pressure, eye diseases, change in amount of cerebral blood flow, and increase of intracranial pressure.
CONCLUSION
An exercise specialist must educate the basic respiration technique to the exercise participants before starting the resistance exercise and can effectively deliver the recommendations related to the Valsalva maneuver respiration technique. And the exercise specialist should accurately grasp the information about the participant's medical history through the counseling and should consider the individuality in applying the Valsalva maneuver respiration technique to different participants in order to secure the safety in doing exercise and to maximize the exercise effects.
